For a lesson plan, worldwide news reports, a scientific reports, see http://techquaikachi.wordpress.com.

I state for the historical record my personal testimony related to the Hopi prophecy.

In the late 1960s, my wife and I joined the Committee for Traditional Indian Land and Life (T.I.L.L.) to provide legal assistance for the Nisqually Indians seeking to protect their fishing rights in Washington state and the Hopi resistance against drilling for oil and mining for coal and uranium by the Peabody Coal Company.

Hopi elders sought publicity for their ancient prophecy that the divine plan is for the simple life in harmony with the land. Dan Katchongva and James Kots walked me to Prophecy Rock and told me that in the past many of their ancestors had gone off to create societies of material wealth, calling to mind the fates of the Aztecs, the Mayans, the Incas. The mining and adoration of gold expedited their doom.

Forty years ago, nobody thought about carbon. The Hopi prediction that drilling and mining would lead to disaster seemed only metaphorical and self-serving.
Today it is exactly the accepted scientific assessment.

The geographical and philosophical distance of the Hopi in their desert isolation no doubt gave them perspective on the relatively sudden mass invasion of the West during the late 19th century. Like scientists today, perhaps they saw capitalism very clearly going out of control.

During one of our visits to Hotevilla, Dan Katchongva had his 117th birthday. That was about 1970, and when he recited the prophecy at Prophecy Rock, he laid no claim to having initiated or developed the prophecy and referred to it as from before his time.

How much did Dan believe in the prophecy? He was blind, but that same year he had a young boy lead him by the hand in an all-day hike across the reservation over the high desert to where an oil well was being drilled, so that he could personally protest.
.
The inscription at Prophecy Rock shows two paths, and this divergence is historical. The ancestors of the Hopi did that inscription when the village of Oraibi was founded over a thousand years ago. They had split into two factions, just as happened at Oraibi over a thousand years later in 1906. One of the ancient groups took the high path, opting for materialism and affluence. They moved south and may have been ancestors of the Aztecs, Mayans, and other peoples. The other group followed the simple life as farmers of beans, corn, and melons and became the present-day Hopi. The prophecy saw disaster looming for those who forsook the simple life.

Looking at Aztec, Mayan, and Inca history, their avid display of gold lured the Spanish to conquer them with red-hot greed and breakneck speed. Looks like an eternal principle to me!
